Malaria risk in Thailand is low and limited to rural forested border areas with Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. There is no malaria risk in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Pattaya. Antimalarial tablets are generally not recommended for typical tourist itineraries; note that mefloquine resistance is present. Bite avoidance (insect repellent, long sleeves at dusk) is advised in any rural border area.
